Instrumental Music

Music at Greenvale Secondary College is part of the core curriculum for all students. Instrumental music (including voice as an instrument) is an optional program for which the school provides tuition via a trained music instructor and access to instruments.

Why Learn Instrumental Music

It’s fun and allows you to be part of our exciting ensemble program.

Learning music activates different parts of our cognitive processes and helps in learning a variety of other disciplines. It’s also a great way to experience the benefits of persistence … and you come away with some cool skills.

You get to perform and represent the school as a leader of our music program. There will be many opportunities for engaging outside the school in community events, trips, etc over the years.

WHAT IT COSTS

Instrumental music lessons cost $400 per year and are charged at $200 per
semester (or instalments by arrangement with the Business Manager). Other
incidental costs for items such as music books, reeds, strings, etc. may be
incurred and will be charged appropriately. Instruments can be hired from our
school (depending on availability). If your child is learning the guitar or
keyboard, you may want to consider purchasing these instruments as an
alternative to hiring them due to their low cost. Our instrumental staff will
be able to recommend brands and stores to help you.

Please do not purchase any instruments from Amazon,
Aldi, eBay or Costco.

$100 instrument hire annual fee* (if required)

  • This subsidises some of the costs to make it more accessible for you.
  • If financial support is required, please contact the Business Manager

Instrument hire is offered to first year instrumental music students. After the first year, families may be required to purchase their own instrument, except for selected instruments as discussed with the Head of Music.

What You Get

  • 40-minute lessons that rotate each week (group size is capped at 3 and is dependent on which instrument you are learning)

  • Tuition with a music instructor
  • Ensemble participation when appropriate (compulsory)
  • Performance opportunities
