CONNECT – DECEMBER 2024

Welcome to our final newsletter for 2024 – building on the success of our second year at Greenvale Secondary College was the aim in 2024 and our students’ contribution to that goal cannot be underestimated. While much of our first and second years was spent establishing ourselves as a school for community, our third year has seen us go from strength-to-strength in developing an inclusive learning environment and a sense of belonging for every student. We are truly creating a learning environment that reflects our values of Excellence, Leadership, Respect and Teamwork.

This year begun with a welcomed sense of normality, albeit with a multitude of new faces to get to know, new curriculum to design, strategies to implement and an abundance of events and activities to coordinate! No year is the same as the last – it is something we are used to and although it can feel overwhelming at times, life is never dull in a school!

It is impossible to capture everything that happens within the pages of a yearbook. We have tried to capture the notable highlights that create memories which will remain long after school is over.

A few that standout for me this year include:

• Designing and developing our future Senior School Programs in preparation for early commencement VCE programs in 2025
• Our continued partnerships with Universities and TAFE, not only for the extended learning experiences but also as we start to prepare our students for what comes beyond Secondary College
• The first year of our Year 9 Connect Program, which provided opportunities for students to focus on themselves, their community, their future and their world.
• The delivery of our stage 2 buildings, which will ensure we have the learning spaces for our students to succeed
• The increase in student led activities and cultural days, which I am sure will become an annual feature on our calendar

Thank you to our families who continue to support and make this a school in which the community can be proud. It was pleasing at one of our final events this year to have the feedback that many of our families feel like this school as it is a good combination of public and private school values and ensures that we work towards supporting every student every day.

I also extend my heartfelt appreciation to our staff, who work tirelessly to ensure quality learning is at the heart of everything we do. This appreciation is also for our school council for their continued support of our school.

As Foundation Principal, I feel privileged to have been a part of another year in the Greenvale Secondary College history books and I cannot wait to see what’s in store for our fourth year. The College will continue to work hard to stay at the forefront of education ensuring we develop the whole student, providing them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to success and become lifelong learners who are generous, active and informed citizens.

Together we continue to dream, believe and achieve.

END OF YEAR REPORTS

End of Year Reports for all students will be published in the final weeks of Term 4 on Compass. All parents will receive a notification when published and are encouraged to contact the relevant Mentor Teacher if you have any follow up questions.

These reports will show parents the great learning their child has engaged in for 2024 as well as providing some useful guidance on strategies for improvement in 2025. As a result, we ask that parents take the time to discuss the report with their child and engage in the learning journey with us.

2024 AWARDS AND PRESENTATION EVENING

After what has been a very busy and productive year, it was great to see so many of our families and community at our Awards and Presentation Evening. It was a great night, and with over 450 people in attendance is a great demonstration of the support our College and students have.

Thank you to all the staff and students who helped make this event memorable, including those who organised, prepared and performed on the night. Thank you also to our guest speakers Mr Iwan Walters MP and Mr Basem Abdo – Federal Labor Candidate for Calwell.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

After receiving over 40 applications for 2025 Year 7 Scholarships, we completed interviews for 12 shortlisted students. It was impressive to see the commitment of these students and their families to the College and even though we would like to give everyone a scholarship, we have awarded the following for 2024:

ADMINISTRATION OFFICE AVAILABILITY

The College will be closed from Thursday 19 December 2024 and will re-open on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 January 2024 and then again on Thursday 30 January 2024.

It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of our third year at Greenvale Secondary College, and that around us teachers are moving equipment into our new buildings and our first Year 10 cohort is at home preparing for their learning in the senior school.

Term 4 has again been filled with significant events, as well as opportunities to celebrate learning and growth. Highlights included the Year 9 Connect City Experience, whole school end of year activities and the College Awards Night where we acknowledged the achievements of GSC students in all areas across 2024.

Now that the summer holidays are upon us, it is an important opportunity for students to take this valuable time to rest, recharge and reflect before this next big year. The extended break is a rare opportunity for young people to spend quality time with family and friends, without the background pressures of keeping up with the demands of schoolwork.

Having said this, it is always important to keep the brain active during a period of significant rest, and summertime reading provides an excellent opportunity for students to engage themselves in an activity that allows them to challenge themselves intellectually while also offering a form of escapism and relaxation.

In 2025, we are looking forward to welcoming students in our revamped library space, which will continue to expand it collection, resources and spaces for use now that the Stage 2 building are operating. Maintaining or beginning a habit of reading now will help prepare students to get the most out of the library and the assistance it offers for secondary students of all year levels.

STRATEGIES FOR INCORPORATING READING INTO YOUR SUMMER ROUTINE

To make the most of the summer reading experience, it is helpful to adopt a balanced approach that accommodates both enjoyment and intellectual stimulation. The following strategies can help students integrate reading into their summer schedules:

1. Set Realistic Goals: Establishing achievable reading targets—whether it is reading a specific number of books or dedicating a set amount of time each day to reading—helps maintain consistency without the pressure of academic deadlines. The goal should be to cultivate a habit of reading rather than to measure quantity.
2. Join a book club: Participating in an online book club or starting one with friends offers an opportunity for discussion and reflection. Sharing opinions on what has been read fosters critical thinking and provides diverse perspectives on the same material.
3. Explore Audiobooks: For students with busy schedules or those who prefer a more flexible approach, audiobooks are a valuable alternative. Audiobooks allow students to engage with literature while in the car, using transport, exercising, or during other activities.
4. Diversify Your Reading Selections: Embrace a wide range of genres—fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and graphic novels—to keep reading engaging and stimulating. Sampling different formats and topics ensures that students remain motivated and curious.
5. Read with purpose: all students have received their booklists for 2025 classes which details that texts they will need in both English and other studies. Reading required novels and plays for English is a great place to start summer reading, as it fills the dual purpose of preparing for the school year. Students who wish to extend themselves may also want to look at textbooks for subjects such as Science and History, and look for related reading on upcoming topics.

CELEBRATING OUR TOP READ OF 2024

As excitement builds for the developments in our library, we would like to acknowledge those students who have persisted with their love of reading throughout the years of the library doubling as a classroom and ITC space (the borrowing desk could be crowded with all that business!).

The following students have been the top borrowers of the GSC Library in 2024 (and it’s worth noting that some of these students only commenced with us in the second half of the year- they have been especially busy with reading).

As we draw to the end of a successful year in the year 9 space, we thought it would thought it would be good to reflect on some of the highlights of 2024.

This year saw the introduction of the Connect Program. Throughout the year the students have engaged in learning opportunities which have helped shape them as individuals in and out of the classroom. The students undertook a personal best project which required them to think about something they wanted to achieve and report back, this may have been developing a new skill like cooking or painting to helping other members of the community. This project was celebrated with a showcase day where parents were invited to view the presentations. The students also focused on their futures, what pathway into the VCE did they want? What careers interested them and this helped shape their year 10 subjects. The program wrapped up in term 4 by getting the students out of Greenvale, the City Experience allowed students to explore parts of Melbourne they would not normally visit and broaden their knowledge on what is available to them.

The year also saw the introduction of electives as part of the student’s academic curriculum. Students were able to engage in 4 subjects throughout the year that they wanted to complete and help guide their selection process for year 10. It is a sign that the students are moving from Junior School students to Senior School students where they have almost complete control over their program and the pathway they wish to travel down.

While the students are very accustomed to completing CATs as their form of assessment each term, in 2024 they were introduced to exams as a form of assessment. While it may have been a little daunting for some students and it took them out of their comfort zone, we were very pleased on how the students undertook both their English and Maths exams. Sitting quiet and working solidly for 90 minutes isn’t easy the students showed great resilience and should be proud of what they achieved. While the exams were important to see what level of understanding they had for 2024, it was also important to build their skills in completing an exam before they sit their year 12 VCAA exams.

In term 3 there was a successful year 9 camp. The students and staff had a great time away from the college. Again, the students at time were pushed out of their comfort zones but they worked together and achieved their goals.

Overall, 2024 has been a year of growth and achievement for the year 9 students. They entered the year as post year 8 students and have left it as young adults. We wish everyone in the middle school community a wonderful break where the batteries can be recharged and ready to come back for 2025. Those who celebrate Christmas we wish you a Merry Christmas and hope everyone has a wonderful New Years.

The instrumental music students have finished the year with a bang! We had so many wonderful performers showcasing their talent at our Awards Night on November 28. They shared their hard work to their friends and family and it was pleasing to watch how far they have developed their skills. The foyer at Broadmeadows Townhall was filled with family and friends supporting all of the amazing performers. There was such a lovely vibe in the room and the students had a fantastic time doing what they love. 

We had solos, duets and our marvellous rock/[pop ensemble. Instruments included saz, violin, vocals, guitar, bass guitar, eclectic piano and drumkit. Throughout the Awards Night, the school ensemble was thrilled to perform 3 band pieces. They got into the swing of things with their first piece called a Little Bit of Swing followed by Dr Rock and ended with one of their favourite pieces, Peter Gunn. The ensemble has worked very hard all year and it was great to celebrate their hard work and share their talents to the school community.

The school ensemble is run by Mrs McPhail and rehearses after school once a week. The students were lucky to have Mr Sheko join ensemble practise each week playing violin to support their playing. The instruments in the ensemble are flute, violin, trumpet, French Horn, alto saxophone, keyboard, bass guitar and percussion. We look forward to growing the ensemble next year and expanding the range of instruments next by adding students on the clarinet, tenor saxophone, trombone, and maybe even the euphonium or tuba.

On Tuesday 10 December the school had Grade 6 Orientation Day. We were fortunate to have some eager music students come in on their remote learning day to perform during the lunch break. The sun was shining and it was the perfect setting outside to perform to our upcoming year 7 students. It was fantastic to talk to some of the students and hear what instrument they would like to learn next year at Greenvale Secondary College.

It’s been fantastic watching the music program expand in 2024. We look forward to an ever bigger instrumental program in 2025. Just a reminder that the following instruments are available to learn and hire (based on availability).

GREENVALE SECONDARY COLLEGE – 2024 YEAR IN REVIEW: A STELLAR YEAR IN SCHOOL SPORTS

As the school year comes to a close, we reflect on a remarkable year for Greenvale Secondary College’s sports program. Under the leadership of Head of Sport, James Tonna, 2024 has been a year of exceptional growth, achievement, and community spirit.

Our sporting calendar was packed with highlights, from the expansion of our scheduled sport training sessions to outstanding performances in athletics, basketball, and cross-country. The AFL program stood out in 2025 with increased participation, demonstrating the boys’ passion and dedication. Weekly training sessions fostered not only skills but also camaraderie among players, setting a solid foundation for future success.

In athletics, our students achieved personal bests across the board, a testament to the meticulous planning and coordination of training schedules and competition fixtures. The SSV championships saw Greenvale athletes shine, bringing home medals and school pride. Similarly, our basketball teams thrived, demonstrating teamwork and resilience at every level.

A key feature of the year has been the inclusive culture adopted by the school sporting program. From elite athletes to students trying sports for the first time, there has been a clear focus on participation, growth, and enjoyment. The newly designed curriculum in Health and Physical Education has played a pivotal role, ensuring all students access opportunities that align with their strengths and interests.

As we look ahead, the foundation laid in 2024 promises even greater achievements in the years to come. Congratulations to all students, staff, and families for a fantastic year in sport!

SEMESTER 2 GOLD AWARD ACTIVITY.

Fifteen students from various year levels were treated to an artistic adventure at Artvo and lunch at Docklands.  These fifteen students tallied up the most positive value points in their year level over the semester.  Congratulations.

STATE SCHOOL RELIEF

State School Relief provides support to students and families requiring support with items needed for school. Assistance includes the provision of vouchers for uniform, stationery packs and school shoes. We are often asked about secondhand books and uniform.  Parents of the college have developed a Facebook Page “ Greenvale Secondary second hand books & uniforms” which has numerous pieces of uniform and school books for sale.

STAFF

The community of Greenvale Secondary College would like to farewell Gianni Vecchio.  Gianni has been an amazing asset to the Student Services Team.  Starting with GSC as a Master of Counselling student completing his university placement to an integral member of the team. We wish Gianni all the best in his next endeavours.

Way- Careers

Way will be the careers ongoing staff member.  Way comes with extensive knowledge of careers and pathways.  Way’s main role in 2025 will be supporting year 10 students work experience placement, completion of Career Action Plans and organizing career based excursions and incursions.

Emer- Youth Worker

In 2025 Emer will be at GSC 4 days a week continuing the work of the Student Services team. Emer has been part of the Blue Edge program working with Victoria Police to help support resilience, help seeking skills and increase self-esteem of young people.

MEET OUR ADMINISTRATION TEAM

 Elizabeth Cullen – Business Manager

Liz is responsible for all HR, finance, facilities and operations matters at the College. Please be in touch if you need to discuss how the College can best support you and your students.

Connie is responsible for daily organising and the school’s schedule. Connie also coordinates student’s first aid and medical information.

Daniel is the first point of contact at Reception and can help you with any enquiry.

Annie Remeysen – Attendance and Engagement Officer

Annie is a member of our Student Engagement Team and is responsible for monitoring student attendance. Annie is a well known face in the Greenvale basketball community and can also assist with CSEF or financial hardship applications.

Kate Wilson– Attendance and Engagement Officer

Kate is a member of our Student Engagement Team and is responsible for monitoring student attendance. Kate is a former staff member at Greenvale Kindergarten and Roxborough Park Primary and will be well known to many.

Nazira Kirim-Esen – Enrolments Officer

Naz is responsible for all new student enquiries to the College. Naz can guide families through all enrolment processes and is able to assist in the Turkish language as required.

Susi Dombrzalski – HR and Office Manager/Executive Assistant

Susi is Executive Assistant to the Principal and can assist with meeting and scheduling requests. In addition, Susi looks after all staff HR matters. She is also a member of the Greenvale Secondary College parent community.

 Shweta Bhatti – Finance Manager

Shweta is responsible for all accounts payable and receivable. You can get in touch if you have enquiries about billing and payments.

Our Administration Team are always happy to assist and support all students and families at the front reception daily. Our Administration Office is open 8:00am – 4:00pm Monday to Friday. We are committed to doing our best and if you ever have any questions or queries, we are here to help.

2025 PARENT PAYMENTS

Greenvale Secondary College is looking forward to another great year of teaching and learning and would like to advise you of our voluntary financial contributions for 2025.

SCHOOL SAVINGS BONUS

The distribution of School Saving Bonus emails to parents and carers, to provide a unique code to use for the $400 credit, started on Tuesday 26 November 2024.

Due to restrictions imposed by Microsoft, parents and carers with email accounts provided by a Microsoft exchange server, or who use an Outlook or Hotmail account, have likely experienced delays in receiving their code email.

The Department of Education have worked directly with Microsoft to resolve this issue and have re-sent the code to impacted email addresses.

Parents and carers who have not received their code email are encouraged to re-check their email accounts, including junk or spam folders.

Please note that the school cannot help if log in emails have not been received by the parent – this is managed by the Department directly. They can be reaching on:
